The United States and Nigeria are poised to enhance cooperation through an AI initiative that will promote economic development and technological progress. Mr. Arthur Brown, the Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy, announced this during the closing of a National Artificial Intelligence Strategy workshop in Abuja.
Details of the Upcoming AI Conference
Mr. Arthur announced that the two nations’ representatives will meet in Lagos for an AI-exclusive conference within two weeks. The event is part of the broader U.S.-Nigeria Bi-National Commission efforts and is intended to leverage AI for mutual economic benefits.
The conference will focus on creating a framework that ensures AI deployment is safe, secure, and transparent.
Mr. Brown pointed out the partnership’s objectives, focusing on human resource development, infrastructure strengthening, and innovation. He praised Nigeria’s proactive approach to AI governance and mentioned that the country had just endorsed a critical United Nations AI resolution.
Dr. Bosun Tijani, Nigeria’s Minister of Communications Innovation and Digital Economy, underscored the importance of AI in improving productivity across various sectors. He stated that the government’s focus extends beyond mere revenue, aiming to establish robust governance for AI technology.
The collaborative efforts are expected to position Nigeria as a leader in AI development within Africa, benefiting both nations economically and technologically in the long run.
