What is the Otherside Metaverse?
Otherside Metaverse is a full-fledged virtual world connected to the BAYC ecosystem in the form of an open MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game). Contrary to widespread perception, the Otherside is neither an ordinary metaverse nor an extension of the BAYC NFTs.
With the perfect blend of MMORPG mechanics and Web3-enabled virtual worlds, BAYC creator Yuga Labs has built one metaverse which reigns them all. Yuga Labs has already been shaping Web3 through its one after another purchase ranging from CryptoPunks and Meebits to the ApeCoin drop.
Now it’s time to fit them all in the Otherside, which will offer users with an interoperable experience that will allow them to move swiftly between metaverses. What’s more, you might wonder!
You can take along your NFTs such as Cryptopunks, Mutant Ape Yacht Club, Cool Cats, World of Women, CrypToads, and more into the Otherside metaverse.
Isn’t it thrilling? Not only that, but the new universe “Otherside”, through its compatibility with other blue-chip NFT projects, has thrown open the doors to a new strange world and a premium destination for investors, NFT enthusiasts, and Metaverse explorers.
What Makes Otherside a Unique Metaverse RPG?
The largest expansion of the BAYC NFT universe is an attempt to add utility to NFTs and transform them into playable characters for its open RPG (Role-playing game) metaverse. The gameplay will have multiplayer features via Improbable’s M2 technology.
The Otherside Metaverse will be able to handle more than half a billion operations per second. Mind blowing isn’t it?
The team behind the Otherside Metaverse project also claims that more than 10,000 people will be able to play together simultaneously and can interact with other players in a natural voice chat. In this respect, NFT collectors can own land in this open-world game, harvest resources, and explore antique artifacts and rare characters.
Though the infrastructure and technology are not specific, the game is embedded in a unique ecosystem that contains Otherdeeds with a set of resources and some Kodas. To understand it better, we will now define the role of resourceful Otherdeeds and mysterious Kodas in the Otherside Metaverse.
What are Otherdeeds and Kodas?
Otherdeeds and Kodas are game elements of the Otherside Metaverse. Otherdeeds are a set of 200,000 parcels of dynamic NFT land with a combination of environment, sediments, and treasures.
Some Otherdeeds are rich in resources while some are home to powerful artifacts and on a very few of them, an enigmatic creature ‘Koda’ roams. We’ll get to what Kodas are in the next segment, but first let’s explore Otherdeed.
As mentioned earlier, Otherdeed is the key to the Otherside Metaverse and a dynamic NFT built as a collection of elements – from resources to Kodas. These Otherdeed NFTs will evolve as you progress in the metaverse and move component pieces around.
Simply put, rather than a static representation of a plot of land, your Otherdeed is designed to evolve along with what you choose to do in the game. Moreover, as the project progresses, the true potential of Otherdeed will be revealed, adding to the mystery surrounding these digital plots.
As the project is still in its infancy, an Otherdeed NFT holder can participate in prototype builds, demos, in-person events, contests, and tests that shape the final game design and experience. Once the Otherside Metaverse launches, your Otherdeed NFTs tied to the land will be revealed in the metaverse map as well.
Knowing these perks associated with Otherdeeds may have piqued your interest to grab one for yourself. Wait, there is a minting process for these dynamic NFT lands which we will soon cover in this article but first let’s get back to the strange mysterious creatures Kodas.
Meet the Kodas
Well, meeting Kodas in the Otherside Metaverse is a tricky and rare instance but we can tell you what you are supposed to do when you meet one – tread cautiously!
Umm, what does it even mean? To tell you the truth, Kodas are primal beings who transcend us to the Otherside and breathe life into this mystical metaverse.
The Koda first made an appearance in the trailer released in March. The trailer featured a bored ape enjoying a cigar and accidentally gulping a newfound potion that spins the world around him. Suddenly, a new world starts emerging in front of him, and there lands a Koda – a small alien creature who drags the ape away into a fantastic magical world – “Otherside”.
Interestingly, the trailer also teased the involvement of other NFTs such as Cryptopunks, World of Women, and Cool Cats to name a few.
With this storyline, we can guess Kodas will play a vital role as other worldly celestial creatures considering the Otherside Metaverse is a part galaxy and a part archipelago.
To simply define Kodas, we can say, Kodas are the additional traits in the Otherdeeds and are the rarest of the rare. Kodas have distinct attributes ranging from different traits and rarity such as weapon, clothing, eyes, head, and core.
Only a few Otherdeed lands have these cute alien creatures, which makes them hard to get. Among them, there is a special category of Kodas – Mega Kodas, the rarest of all.
Note that Kodas are not a standalone NFT collection but a trait of an Otherdeed NFT land. Hence, if you wish to buy Kodas, you have to purchase Koda-bearing Otherdeed NFTs.
Unfortunately, the general public’s chance to mint Otherdeed land NFTs has passed as the minting process for these NFTs was on April 30, 2022. However, you must know how to get your hands on these NFTs in order to participate in future auctions and minting, so read on!
Otherdeed Design and Distribution
Till now, we have discussed that Otherdeeds are power-packed with several distinct environments, sediments, and treasures with resources like powerful artifacts and Kodas.
It is also known that there are a total of 200,000 Otherdeeds, out of which 100,000 were already auctioned and distributed on April 30. The drop mechanism was quite controversial yet Yuga Labs managed to sell all of the NFT lands generating over $318 million in primary market sale.
Even on the secondary market the Otherside NFT lands fetched $242 million. With this overwhelming response from the crypto community, Otherside Metaverse generated $561 million within 24 hours.
At the time of the Otherdeed drop, users who wished to mint Otherdeeds were required to KYC their wallets, while the BAYC and MAYC holders were allowed to claim these Otherdeed without having to do KYC. Basically, KYC was needed for minting but not for claiming the NFTs.
The price to mint was set at 305 ApeCoin, the only currency accepted as a payment method, and the corresponding gas fee was, of course, paid in ETH.
You must be thinking what is it about these Otherdeed lands that everybody was competing to get one. Understand it like this, Otherdeed land NFTs are not only lands but are divided into five island sediments namely:
- Infinite Expanse (Tier 1),
- Cosmic Dream (Tier 2),
- Rainbow Atoms (Tier 3),
- Chemical Goo (Tier 4) and
- Biogenic Swamp (Tier 5).
These sediments have certain properties which decides their rarity and makes them unique. In this way, each Otherdeed land NFT is desirable and collectors want to grab the ones with the most properties such as artifacts, Kodas, tools and treasures.
How are Otherdeeds Distributed?
Out of 200,000 Otherdeeds, 100,000 were distributed in which 10,000 NFTs were allocated for BAYC claim for the Biogenic Swamp at the center of the Otherside. Another set of 20,000 was for MAYC claim for the Chemical Goo on the outskirts of the swamp.
On the other hand, 55,000 were for purchase with ApeCoin for the Rainbow Atoms, Infinite Expanse, and Cosmic Dream. Another 15,000 were for Yuga and other project developers for the Rainbow Atoms, Infinite Expanse, and Cosmic Dream.
Due to a myriad of traits and classifications, each Otherdeed is distinct from the others in some way. To understand its design better let’s dig deep into it.
- Other than sediments, Otherdeeds are also cataloged in several tiers called Environments such as Sludge, Bog, Obsidian, Luster, Crimson, Glacia, Steppes, Thornwood, Ruins, and more. So you get an idea of how this is segmented.
- These Otherdeeds are also categorized into several Atmospheric Scenes such as Decay, Harsh, Spirit, Volcanic, Mineral, Growth, Chaos, and Psychedelic. Additionally, they have different Resources spread out in all directions including Eastern resource, Western resource, Southern resource, and Western resource.
- With all these resources comes some distinct Land properties, for instance, Nebula, Nocturna, Claymer, Scumbria, Vaporhaze, Shatterfrost, and many more.
Combining all these, Otherdeed NFT lands becomes a full-blown collection with different traits and rarities. Once you get Otherdeed NFTs, you also get rare game elements like resources, natural materials, Kodas, and artifacts. All of which will be displayed as your land NFT traits.
Otherside Game Elements
Otherdeeds with such diverse properties make the Otherside Metaverse worth exploring. It’s worth mentioning that there are endless possibilities of what you can do in the whimsical lands of Kodas. Yet, there are more fun elements in the Metaverse that extends to artifacts and natural materials which will help you build the Otherside.
Each piece of land in the Otherside is fertile and nurtures up to four replenishing natural resources that you can harvest and utilize. These resources are Anima (for research), Ore (metal), Shard (stone), and Root (wood). Some of these raw materials are rare, some less so. These natural materials are what will shape the Otherside Metaverse.
Artifacts are treasures and tools scattered throughout the expanse of Otherside lands. These are rare objects and some of which cannot be created by any other means. Similar to Kodas, these can be found on a very few Otherdeeds. So, if you find an artifact, remember that it holds secrets that will unfold as the Otherside Metaverse expands.
Immersive Otherside Game Mechanism
If you are an Otherdeed holder, this is the adventure you will embark on. You are also onboard to see how this strange new world will evolve through the immersive Otherside Metaverse. Let’s begin the journey.
- First Trip
Otherdeed holders will be part of the first tech demo of the Otherside in which the whole community will come together to explore and plan the journey ahead.
- The Codex
In this, players will learn to link their lands and more. Otherside Codex is a living document co-written with the Otherside metaverse participants, which we will now call Voyagers.
Every step you take on the Otherside will open a door to bring possibilities and risks for the future, so tread cautiously.
- Koda Origins and the Decoupling
The Otherside Metaverse Gameplay follows a storyline in which a cosmic earthquake shakes up the universe bringing with it a vision into the Kodas’ past. This is the point at which Voyagers can decouple their Otherdeeds’ constituent parts.
After the decoupling, players or voyagers can decide where they want their Kodas and artifacts to be.
- The Growth
Well, Otherside metaverse is dangerous as much as it’s dynamic. The lands of the Otherside nurture resources but a destructive and invasive species would also emerge as the metaverse evolves. So beware, and heed the Codex, Voyager.
- The Agora
This is where it gets interesting. Players can buy, sell, barter, and trade for what they need or they can simply create new items from raw materials.
- The Dream
An arcade machine is set up at the Center of the Biogenic Swamp. Like many other things in the Otherside Metaverse, its utility will be revealed with time. Yet, one thing is for sure, Voyagers would be rewarded.
- The Choice
Adding a whole new dimension to the Otherside, new lands will be activated and available for Voyagers ahead in the journey. What lies beyond the Otherside can not be predicted just yet.
What creatures call it home or whether they are friends or foes, the land holds the answer to all this. But once the new dimension reveals itself out in the open, it’s time to choose a side.
- The Settling
It depends on the Voyagers on what they will make out of Otherside. Now, you are familiar with Otherdeeds, Kodas, resources, and everything you will need in the strange land. With this, you can start crafting items and creating structures to populate your Otherdeed land.
- The Toolkit
An SDK (Software Development Kit) brings opportunities for Voyagers to build what they desire on the Otherside, the world welcomes all sorts of contributions and involvement.
- The Aeronauts
Otherside Metaverse is full of surprises and mysteries, but who knows what Voyagers might discover with a different perspective.
- The Rift
Just when you think you know everything, an interdimensional rift cuts open the sky, setting you into a new adventure to explore above and beyond.
If this doesn’t make you eager to grab some Otherdeeds and dip your toes in the immersive Otherside Metaverse, then we don’t know what will. And if you are wondering how to participate in metaverse or how to buy Otherdeeds or Kodas then we got you covered, read on.
How to Participate in the Otherside Metaverse?
To participate in the Otherside Metaverse, you first have to buy or mint Otherdeeds NFT lands. The first wave of the minting process already took place on April 30, 2022, in which 100,000 out of 200,000 Otherdeed NFT lands were put for auction.
In this general public NFT land sale, 55,000 Otherdeeds were available for KYCed wallets and 45,000 for the BAYC and MAYC holders to claim. The claim limit was 1 Otherdeed per MAYC and BAYC NFT holder and the holders were allowed to claim within 21 days of the sale ending.
For the ‘new to the Club’ users, participating in the mint process means you need to KYC your wallet on somethingisbrewing.xyz.
Well, the first wave is finished, so you can’t claim or mint right now. You’ll have to wait for the future waves, in which the remaining 100,000 Otherdeeds NFT lands will be auctioned, so be prepared!
Note that, buying or minting Otherdeeds is not the only way to participate in the Otherside Metaverse. You can directly join the SDK program which offers developers the tools they need to build characters, character skins, structures, in-game items, and minigames for Otherside.
How to buy Otherdeeds and Kodas?
Even if you missed the first wave of the Otherdeeds minting process, there are more waves to come which would be worth participating in, and we will tell you why.
As per the Otherside website, minting will be done in waves as mentioned earlier. Though the price per Otherdeed (305 ApeCoin) will stay the same, the per-wallet limit will increase with each wave.
For example, in the first wave, there was a limit of 2 Otherdeeds minted per wallet. In wave 2, KYCed wallets can mint up to an additional 4 Otherdeeds. Yuga Labs can also announce waves 3,4 and 5 as necessary until the collection is minted.
Most probably there would be more waves to come as 100,000 Otherdeed NFT lands are still there to be put up for sale, and you never know what else is yet to be unveiled.
For the time being, you can purchase Otherdeeds from the secondary market on OpenSea. It should also be noted that, if you see NFTs of individual Kodas, resources, or artifacts for sale on OpenSea or elsewhere, it’s a scam.
You can not buy Kodas, resources, artifacts, or any other Otherside game elements separately. All these game elements can only be bought by purchasing Otherdeed which has these attributes like Kodas, resources, and artifacts.
Otherside Licensing Agreement
It has been established that you can freely sell, transfer, or otherwise dispose of the Otherdeed NFTs. However, Otherdeed holders do not receive any image or other intellectual property (IP) rights associated with Otherdeed.
According to Otherside Licensing Agreement, you can only use Otherdeeds for non-commercial or personal purposes such as home display, display in a gallery, or creating reasonable backup copies or printouts.
The debate around whether or not NFT collectors should be granted IP rights of any tokens is nothing new. Nevertheless, Yuga Labs has measures under its Licensing policy that prevent the NFT owners from profiting off their NFTs.
Understandably, the team wants to be the ones to profit off of their IPs but these clauses contradict the values of some in the BAYC community.
Additionally, Koda License Agreement refers to Koda as an NFT on the Ethereum blockchain and the Koda license is revocable. This means the personal, non-commercial license granted to NFT holders can be revoked by Yuga Labs at any time but it’s unlikely to happen nonetheless.
The Future of the Otherside Metaverse
With the BAYC Otherside Metaverse, the NFT community will get a chance to bring their NFTs to life in this virtual world of never-ending adventure. Till now we know that the Cryptopunks, Mutant Ape Yacht Club, Cool Cats, World of Women, and CrypToads are involved in this magical journey along with the Bored Apes.
More NFT projects would hop on board, and we could even see significant entities in the NFT space being engulfed in its immersive metaverse over time. When talking about the future of Otherside Metaverse, you might be wondering what major players are behind this fascinating venture.
The involvement of Animoca Brands, a driving force behind the widely popular metaverse game The Sandbox, sets a far higher hope for the Otherside metaverse to succeed. Similarly, Improbable, a British metaverse technology company is also associated with the Otherside project.
With Animoca Brands and Improbable, Yuga Labs’ BAYC Otherside would bring something extraordinary to the crypto community. While the Otherdeed holders would keep a sort of foundation stone to the Otherside, developers will also participate through the SDK program and build in-game characters and items for Otherside.
Avalanche proposed to migrate the Otherside metaverse from Ethereum due to the enthusiasm around the project and the huge response from the NFT community during the first wave of minting Otherside NFTs. The proposal came after Yuga Labs complained of Ethereum’s network congestion and increasing gas fees during the mint sale of its Otherside NFT lands.
Aside from Yuga Labs, the most prominent influence behind Bored Apes is currently venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz (dubbed “a16z”), which led Yuga Labs’ seed round through their crypto fund.
It’s fair to say, the Otherside project could collaborate with other blockchains as well in the days ahead. After Yuga Labs’ infamous Dutch auction, it also declared to develop its own blockchain.
Maybe the Otherside metaverse project could become compatible with other blockchains, since it claims that players would be able to move swiftly between different metaverses.
We can only guess. Nevertheless, the Otherside would continue to create waves as the project holds so much potential, which is yet to be revealed.
When we see the big picture, the BAYC Otherside project has no limits and boundaries on how far it will reach and expand its ‘Disney 3.0’ vision especially with Andreessen Horowitz’s money pouring in. Why don’t you just step into the Otherside Metaverse if you’ve made it this far? See you there!
