Arguably the top football league in the world, the English Premier League, has filed for cryptocurrency and NFT trademarks. On June 1, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) registered two trademarks related to the metaverse and NFT.
The metaverse trademark attorney, Mike Kondoudis, tweeted:
The Football Association Premier League’s trademarks consist of two separate logos. The one with serial number 97438136 is described as “the head of a lion wearing a crown in three-quarter view” while the other with serial number 97438169 is described as “a loving cup trophy with a crown on top, a lion on each side”.
The goods and services associated with these logo marks are specified by these trademarks.
They include, inter alia:
- NFT-authenticated image, video, music, and audio files.
- Software for facilitating blockchain-based financial transactions using cryptocurrency.
- Virtual/augmented reality software for providing virtual reality experiences.
- Online marketplace for NFTs, and cryptocurrency exchange services.
- Financial exchange for trading virtual currency.
- Virtual footwear, clothing, headwear, sportswear, and football shirts.
- Virtual environments in which users can interact.
- Creation of online retail stores that allow users to create hosted blockchain-based NFT stores.
Recently, one of the Premier League teams, Arsenal Football Club partnered with Unagi to create an NFT-based play-to-earn game. Users can trade NFTs with other players in the game.
