OpenAI has rolled out a major memory update to its AI model, ChatGPT, so that it can store details from all previous conversations, not only the ongoing one.
The update enables the AI to provide much more responsive and useful answers by remembering users’ habits, previous queries, and critical context across sessions. By remembering users preference and interest it aims to improve in assisting tasks such as writing, learning, and provide better advices.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has shared this update on X, saying, “We have greatly improved memory in chatgpt–it can now reference all your past conversations!” The new memory feature is currently being rolled out to Pro users and will soon be available to Plus users as well.
Altman noted that the feature is not yet available in the European Economic Area (EEA), the UK, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein.
Additionally, he addressed this with a lighthearted tweet, saying, “Call me, Liechtenstein, let’s work this out!” — hinting at regulatory or legal hurdles in those regions.
Users have full control over memory. They can choose to opt out of memory entirely or use temporary chats, which don’t store any information or affect memory settings. OpenAI says this is a step toward building AI assistants that can evolve with users over time, becoming more useful and personalized in their daily lives.
