Most Of The Ai Things In India Are Silly, Says Narayan Murthy

Infosys co-founder Narayan Murthy recently criticized the overt use of artificial intelligence in everyday conversations by politicians and industry leaders in India, stating that most of AI things in India are “silly, odd things.”

Speaking at the event ‘TiEcon Mumbai 2025’, Murthy expressed his displeasure that in India it has become a fashion to talk about artificial intelligence (AI) in any field.

Murthy said, “I think somehow it has become fashionable in India to talk of AI for everything.” I have seen several normal, ordinary programs being touted as AI. However, I find that most of the so-called AI things available are silly, old programs.”

At the event, he had a discussion on AI with Harish Mehta, who is the founding president of TiE Mumbai. During the discussion, Murthy asserted that there are two major pillars that form the foundation of advanced and genuine AI. These pillars are machine learning and deep learning.

He further explained it, saying that “machine learning enables extensive correlation for predictions and deep learning, which mimics human brain function using unsupervised algorithms. Deep learning is responsible for managing unsupervised algorithms.”

Murthy added that, “deep learning, using the data, creates new branches of programs or new conditions, and then it will be able to make decisions. Unsupervised algorithms, which use deep learning and neural networks, are the ones that have much greater potential to do things that will mimic human beings better and better.”

As per the reports, he further highlighted AI’s advantages, saying that if used properly, it can greatly benefit people.

He stated that, “Technology will eliminate certain jobs, but if we use it in an assisted manner, we can grow the economy.” AI, for example, if you use it in autonomous vehicles for transport and hospital care, will lead to the expansion of those companies and create jobs.”
