Openai’s Sam Altman To Meet Pm Modi, India’s Ai On Agenda

Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, is reportedly set to meet Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, on February 5 during his visit to India.

During a CNBC interview, S. Krishnan, Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), spoke about this visit. Altman may meet with IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to explore how OpenAI’s technologies can be applied in India.

This visit is aligned with India’s push into AI, supported by the newly launched IndiaAI mission. This project has received Rs 10,371 crore in funding over five years. When Altman will be in Delhi, he is also expected to meet with prominent venture capital investors, including those from Peak XV Partners and Accel.

This visit is part of Altman’s global tour, which includes Japan, South Korea, the UAE, Germany, and France. It marks his second trip to India, following his June 2023 meeting with PM Modi to discuss AI regulations.

Krishnan emphasized that while India is open to working with OpenAI, the country’s AI development will focus on open-source models. He stressed the importance of data sovereignty and security, noting that India’s AI models must be built on open-source foundations.

However, OpenAI’s activities have faced legal challenges in India. Various media houses have filed lawsuits against the company over alleged copyright infringement, further complicating its operations in the country.
