Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani is all set to build the world’s largest artificial intelligence (AI) data centre in India at Gujarat’s Jamnagar. The data centre would play a vital role in building the country’s digital infrastructure, and, at the same time, it will also help India in becoming more competitive in the global Artificial Intelligence (AI) race.
This energetic project is expected to give a powerful push to India’s rapidly growing artificial intelligence capabilities. As reported by the Hindustan Times, Reliance is purchasing advanced AI semiconductors from Nvidia Corporation to support this ambitious move and is investing in the AI sector.
These high-performance AI-powered chips are important for the complex calculations for AI-driven tools, such as ChatGPT and other generative AI platforms. In October 2024, during the NVIDIA AI Summit, it was declared that Reliance and NVIDIA have collaborated to establish AI infrastructure in India.
As part of this collaboration, NVIDIA will equip Reliance with its state-of-the-art Blackwell AI processors for its one-gigawatt data centre. During the summit, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang said that, during a conversation with Mukesh Ambani, he thinks India should manufacture its own AI.
In response, Mukesh Ambani said, “India has immense potential to spearhead AI and digital technologies, and apart from the US and China, India has the best digital connectivity infrastructure.”
However, Ambani has also made it very clear that his final aim is to make AI accessible to everyone in India. He further added, “We want to offer the lowest AI inferencing costs in the world, making AI affordable and available to all.”
However, last year in December, during the celebration of the 25th anniversary of Reliance’s first refinery at Jamnagar, Akash Ambani, the director of Reliance Industries Ltd., also shared his vision for the future of Jamnagar. He said, “The AI infrastructure that we have commenced working on in Jamnagar will not only make Jamnagar a leader in AI infrastructure but will also place it amongst the top ranks in the world in the next 2 years.”
