Apple has temporarily disabled its AI news summarising feature known as Apple Intelligence which brought the company under investigation for frequently butchering the facts.
In December the BBC was the first to voice about the software change of the company. The call came after the BBC sent readers a notification about its news of Luigi Mangione, the man arrested after the killing of Brian Thompson, a healthcare insurance executive, in New York City.
Some iPhones briefed the BBC’s news stories saying, “Luigi Mangione shoots himself.” He had not.
The feature was introduced to help iPhone users so that by the help of the feature they can quickly catch up on content from their notifications and lock screens. But instead of it, the feature was providing false information and news to its users.
The developers of Apple have said that they are working to improve summaries of notifications for news and entertainment apps. They have plans to make the feature available again in the future with the software update.
A BBC spokesperson said, “It was pleased that Apple had heard its concerns and decided to make a change, Our priority is the accuracy of the news we deliver to audiences, which is essential to building and maintaining trust.”
In addition, Apple also said, “It will provide the feature of warning for its users who will receive notification summaries for other apps. The warning will say that the feature is still in development and that there could be errors”.
Apple is among the list of tech companies that have entered late in the AI race. Last year the company introduced its AI software called Apple Intelligence in its iPhones. However, The AI features are only available on its iPhone 15 and 16 models.
