OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, plans to open a factory in Singapore, Brussels, Seattle, and Paris, alongside growing demand in San Francisco, London, Dublin, and Tokyo later this year to meet the growing demand for AI tools in the Asia-Pacific region. ChatGPT usage in Singapore has grown impressively, with weekly users doubling since January.
To support its activities, OpenAI is building a team to work closely with local governments, businesses, and organizations in Singapore. Oliver Jay has been appointed Managing Director of International, where he will oversee OpenAI’s global expansion from Singapore.
The company is committed to developing Singapore’s local AI ecosystem. It plans to collaborate with government partners such as the Economic Development Board (EDB) to create an AI-enabled future for all.
As part of this effort, OpenAI has partnered with AI Singapore, committing to build products of up to US$1 million using open data that reflects the linguistic and cultural diversity of Southeast Asia.
CEO Sam Altman expressed excitement about the expansion, citing Singapore’s strong tech leadership and ability to solve complex social problems. EDB Managing Director Jacqueline Poh stressed that OpenAI in Singapore highlights the strength of the country’s AI ecosystem, bolstered by government investment in AI talent and technology.
The Sam Altman-run company said, We’re opening offices in NYC, Seattle, Paris, Brussels, and Singapore, alongside our growing San Francisco, London, Dublin, and Tokyo offices.”
