Hyundai Introduces Ai Sound Analysis

A leader in automotive technology, Hyundai Mobis, has introduced a cutting-edge AI system for quality inspection using sound analysis in its production lines.

The Acoustic AI system, recently piloted at the Changwon plant which produces Electric Power Steering (EPS), marks a significant advancement in manufacturing. Unlike traditional AI focused on language tasks, Acoustic AI interprets specific sounds critical for quality assessment.

Hyundai Mobis plans to expand this system to other production lines, prioritizing components like braking systems known for noise during operation. The AI can detect defects at an impressive rate of one unit per second, crucial for maintaining high standards in the plant’s annual production of 1.3 million EPS units.

Hyundai Mobis plans to extend the Acoustic AI inspection system from the Changwon plant to other component production lines, prioritizing parts like braking systems that inherently generate noise due to their operational nature.

Choi Nak-Hyun, Vice President of Digital Transformation at Hyundai Mobis, said, “This initiative marks a pioneering example of process innovation not only in the automotive sector but across the global manufacturing industry. We will continue introducing differentiated AI-based technologies for production, R&D, and improvements in work environments.”

The Acoustic AI system operates at impressive speed, inspecting up to one unit per second at the Changwon plant, where approximately 1.3 million EPS units are produced annually. It analyzes sound waveforms generated by EPS motors to detect deviations that may indicate defects affecting steering performance and safety.

The production process includes 23 stages, from component assembly to vibration and noise inspection.

Hyundai Mobis intends to validate and further develop Acoustic AI, leveraging data-driven insights to refine its capabilities and maintain leadership in AI-driven manufacturing solutions. This initiative underscores their commitment to advancing smart factory technologies worldwide.

The implementation of Hyundai Mobis’ Acoustic AI system represents a pioneering step forward in enhancing manufacturing quality through advanced sound-based inspection technology.
